Building the Future Together: Celebrating Take Your Child to Work Day in Las Vegas

Updated: May 14

Every year, Take Your Child to Work Day offers a special opportunity for families across the nation to bridge the gap between home and the workplace. At the City of Las Vegas, this day is more than a fun field trip — it's a meaningful celebration of learning, civic pride, and most importantly, collaboration.

In Las Vegas, Take Your Child to Work Day takes place on the fourth Thursday of April each year. This year, it fell on April 24, 2025. This day was an opportunity for parents to take their children to work, providing a glimpse into their profession. It was also a chance for children to see what other parents do and potentially inspire their future goals. For that reason, the TYCTWD committee created an entire schedule of events and a multitude of opportunities for each department to showcase their unique purpose. They didn't just follow their parents around; they. had the chance to learn about all the career opportunities the city has to offer.

This year the twins joined me for Take Your Child to Work Day! As seventh graders, with their own unique skill sets and interests, it was important for them to explore the many different career fields the city of Las Vegas has to offer.

Hands down, this is one of my favorite days of the year! I'm so proud of what I do that I often talk to my kids about "work." They know exactly what I do, some of the skills it takes and even some of the challenges I face. I believe it is important to communicate to them what it means to be a professional and to inspire cooperation. They need to have an understanding that every job at the city impacts and overlaps with others to make our community better. It is a collaborative, multi-department effort.

A Day of Discovery

From city planners and environmental officers to city marshals and parks staff, city employees across all departments welcomed children into offices, council chambers, work sites, and community centers. They shared not just the what of their jobs, but the why — and the role collaboration plays in making Las Vegas a thriving, innovative city.

Teaching the Power of Teamwork

City government is a team sport. Every initiative — from street repairs to youth programs — relies on multiple departments working in sync. Take Your Child to Work Day helps children understand that no one builds a better city alone.

This year, we saw kids participate in mock City Council meetings, problem solve with SmartLab, apply for a Business License for the business of their dreams, and learn about emergency management with Fire & Rescue. These experiences sparked curiosity and reinforced a core lesson: when we combine our talents, ideas, and perspectives, we create lasting impact.

Leaving an Imprint for Tomorrow

By involving the next generation in our daily work, we plant the seeds of civic responsibility and impress upon them the value of public service. We show our children that their voices matter, and that their hands can, too, can shape the future of Las Vegas — whether as artists, engineers, safety officers, decision makers, community leaders, or volunteers.

When we invite our children into the workplace, we’re not just giving them a glimpse into what we do — we’re showing them how much we can accomplish when we work together. They will be more inclined to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to make a lasting imprint on their community, too.

Let’s continue building a city where every child can see their future — and every adult knows they’re helping shape it, one collaboration at a time.
