Commissioning a Mural or Decorative Art
The Answers You Need
Commissioning a Custom Mural: What to expect at each stage of the. mural painting process
Discovery Conversation & Complimentary Consultation
Give me a call or send me an email with a description of your project, including the size of the wall/walls, brief description of the space and your vision/ideas (if you have) for the artwork. I offer a complimentary consultation either via phone call or onsite in person, but I recommend the personal meeting. It would be ideal if you could send me photos of the space. After our in-depth conversation about the project, I will provide you with a written work estimate.
The cost of a wall mural is determined by size, level of intricacy/detail and location, such as wall, ceiling or other materials, height, and whether exterior or interior space to be painted. Most mural prices are given per-square-footage and usually range between $10-$30/sq.ft. The larger the mural the less expensive the pricing is per-square-foot. Some murals may require extensive staging (i.e.: high or ceiling murals), cost for those projects will be discussed separately.
As a professional mural artist and decorative painter, I also utilize techniques and materials for painting on surfaces other than walls, such as concrete, wood, metal, glass and fabric. Pricing for specialty products and paintings are different. I can discuss those options during my complimentary consultation.
Commission Agreement, Retainer and Deposit
In my proposal for work I will include a Commission Agreement. If you decide to move forward with hiring me, the signed agreement along with a retainer will be required for booking.
The retainer can vary based on the scope of the project, and typically ranges between $500-$1,500. This fee is non-refundable, and due prior to the first draft — however, it will be applied toward the total cost of the mural at the end.
A deposit, typically 50% of the total cost, is due two weeks prior to the first day of onsite painting. This allows for ordering of supplies and confirms the scheduling dates. At this time, we will review the mural design concept again and see if either of us have had any new thoughts or ideas on the mural design. We will confirm the start date and time, and confirm any preparation of the space as necessary.
Design Process and Draft
My approach to design is to collaborate with my clients to participate in the creative process. It is essential that we begin the design process with a clear description of the tone and style of the mural. This is typically achieved through a talking things through and sharing visual images to inspire the artwork.
Based on our initial design discussion, I will create a draft and ask for your feedback. If needed, I will prepare a revised draft to integrate your feedback. Revision may include up to two sets of changes by you; additional sketches charged at $100/draft.
The design draft that we agree on becomes a framework or guideline — not an exact representation of the finished work of art. A mural really “happens on the wall” and not on paper. However, having a clear design direction is imperative for a successful project.
My schedule for painting wall. murals onsite is generally limited to Friday - Sunday schedule. I create portable pieces in my home studio, in Northwest Las Vegas. I like to touch base regularly as the work progresses to ensure that expectations are being met and everything is on the right track. My focus is on getting things right, and I work until we are both satisfied with the results. I will also let you know when I am close to completion so we can review the work together and create a list of final tweaks that are needed. After making the final adjustments, the mural is complete.
Trusting a mural artist with your wall is a leap of faith. I feel extremely privileged to do this work and feel incredibly grateful to each and every client who has trusted me with their walls over the years as a professional mural artist.
